What does it actually mean when someone says they have anxiety?

Anxiety is defined by a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. It is a normal response to stress. However, when those feelings do not go away or become more excessive than it may be a sign of an Anxiety disorder.

Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in Australia. On average, one in four people – one in three women and one in five men – will experience anxiety at some stage in their life.  Studies conducted by Beyond Blue tell us that in a 12-month period, over two million Australians experience anxiety.

There are several types of anxiety disorders such as:

  • General anxiety disorder

  • Panic disorder

  • A Specific phobia

  • Agoraphobia

The most common symptoms experienced from someone with anxiety may include the following:

  • Nervousness

  • Having a sense of impending danger

  • Increased heart rate

  • Breathing rapidly

  • Sweating

  • Trembling

  • Feeling weak or tired

  • Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

This is an effective form of psychotherapy for people who have symptoms of anxiety. Medications

There are several types of medications used to treat anxiety which include Benzodiazepines (for short term anxiety) and SSRI’s which are often recommended for those who have had symptoms of anxiety long-term. If you are thinking about commencing medication for your symptoms of anxiety, please speak to your GP to discuss the benefits and side-effects of medication. Medication can work effectively when used in conjunction with psychotherapy.

Self-Treatment

There are a few different self-treatment options which you can try at home which can assist in reducing your symptoms of anxiety. These may include stress-management and relaxations techniques, exercise and challenging your negative thoughts.
